British Shaker Kitchen in Bold Colours - West Hampstead

This British shaker kitchen was designed for a private home in West Hampstead, forming part of a light-filled open-plan kitchen and dining space. The brief was to create a characterful, design-led kitchen that embraced colour while remaining rooted in classic British shaker principles.

The result is a confident and expressive scheme that balances traditional proportions with contemporary open-plan living.

The Kitchen Design

The layout is anchored by a substantial central island, finished in a warm terracotta tone to create a strong visual focal point. The island incorporates generous storage, integrated cooking and informal seating, while a timber breakfast bar softens the transition between kitchen and dining areas.

Perimeter cabinetry is finished in a bold yet muted sage tone, bringing depth and personality to the space without overwhelming it. Classic shaker door profiles provide structure and familiarity, allowing the colour palette to feel timeless rather than trend-driven.

Glazed wall cabinets introduce lightness across the main run of units, while integrated lighting highlights the stone splashback and adds warmth to the overall scheme. Tall cabinetry houses appliances discreetly, maintaining clean lines and balance throughout the elevation.

Open-Plan Living & Dining

The kitchen opens directly onto the dining area, positioned alongside large sliding doors overlooking the garden. This connection allows natural light to flood the space, enhancing the colour contrast between island and perimeter cabinetry.

Herringbone flooring runs throughout, visually linking the kitchen and dining zones and reinforcing the sense of craftsmanship. The combination of island seating and a full dining table allows the space to adapt easily to everyday family use and social entertaining.

Design Summary

This West Hampstead project demonstrates how a traditional British shaker kitchen can be reimagined through confident use of colour. By combining classic door detailing with a contemporary palette and open-plan layout, the design delivers warmth, individuality and lasting appeal.
